Blue Museum / Little Hag / Shana Falana (solo)

Blue Museum is the brainchild of songwriters Michael Hollis and Jeremy Boniello, both veterans of other well known bands like Breakfast in Fur and Lara Hope and the Arktones. Michael and Jeremy composed the record when everyone was forced into isolation during the pandemic and enlisted award winning composer/producer/engineer Scott Petito to help them realize their vision on Room to Breathe, which draws influences from power pop groups such as The Lemonheads, 90’s alternative like The Flaming Lips, and experimental indie rock like Phil Elvrum and Wilco.

Little Hag, the artist formerly known as Avery Mandeville, was conceived in a New Jersey basement and born again during quarantine. Signed by Bar/None Records just before everything shut down, Little Hag emerged in 2020 with "Tetris," a 2 minute slice of pure pop pugnaciousness with a bummer end of summer vibe, followed by a compilation LP of older Mandeville tracks titled "Whatever Happened To Avery Jane?" She’s a confrontational frontwoman with a penchant for brutal honesty, profanity, and the taboo, and a voice that has been compared to Roy Orbison, Angel Olsen, silk taffeta, and a car backing out of a gravel driveway.

The latest from NY psych/shoegaze rocker Shana Falana, Darkest Light (Arrowhawk Records) explores extreme contrasts and the process of conversion. From anthemic pop (“Go Higher”) into gutsy sludge rock (title track) and moments of elegant, minimalist beauty (“Come and Find Me”), Darkest Light is described by Falana as “druggy music by sober people.” In her 40s and owning it, the veteran of the San Francisco and Brooklyn experimental pop scenes finds themes of rebirth and empowerment in the darkest materials. Falana worked for the third time with producer D. James Goodwin (Kevin Morby, Wand) to craft a record of great sonic and thematic substance. Shana combines live looping of reverb-drenched vocals and guitar with tribal drums and stunning visual projections. Her live experience has often been described as transcendental.
