The PENNY SERENADE TRIO will perform a holiday swinging jazz show on Saturday December 17th at 7:30 PM, two sets. The group is led by local stride pianist Jeff Weinman, with Catskill's David Poole on drums, and special guest, clarinetist Andriy Milavsky on clarinet, coming up from Manhattan. Jeff and Andriy are old friends and played traditional jazz together for years with great musical kinship born of friendship. Andriy Milavsky is a 3rd generation traditional Carpathian mountain village clarinetist and flautist. He also was first chair of the Ukrainian National Symphony prior to emigrating to the USA. He currently leads the traditional Ukrainian folk group Cheres in NYC. Amazingly, Andriy first learned New Orleans jazz from secretly listening to black market Louis Armstrong Hot Five and Seven recordings forbidden by the Soviet regime that ruled Ukraine in his youth. His love of this "forbidden" music has served him well, and it's a pleasure to have him join PENNY SERENADE at Avalon for this special holiday show! This show will include jazz arrangements of traditional Christmas carols as well as vintage New Orleans piano jazz and blues. Tickets: $15.
